Cardio BP Study
In a study of 50 competitive distance runners, 'Distance Runners as Models of Optimal Health' by Doctor Harold Elrick, a substantial incidence of elevated blood pressure was found. In a statement that supported this finding, Doctor Marvin Moser, Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College, said that except for a small percentage, "there is no convincing data that systematic exercise even if performed 3 to 4 times a week has resulted in significant continuous lowering of blood pressure." Commenting on the surprisingly high total cholesterol levels and low (so-called) good cholesterol levels in highly conditioned runners, Doctor Elrick said that vigorous physical activity does not guarantee low total cholesterol or high good cholesterol values. Despite claims that exercise increases good cholesterol which purportedly cleans clogged arteries that can cause high blood pressure, a study at the Pittsburgh School of Medicine showed that good cholesterol levels actually decreased.

Blood pressure rises during exercise because activation of the sympathetic nervous system releases adrenaline which constricts blood vessels in the deep body body as cardiac output increases. (Incidently an overactive sympathetic nervous system has been found to be significant in Obesity, contra-indicating further constriction of blood vessels with exercise due to the risk of a heart attack.) The reason the muscles can work so hard during exercise is because they pull virtually all of the blood out of the body (up to 90%).
