Parathyroid Hormone... the half-life of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) is less than 20 minutes. It acts directly on bone to increase bone reabsorption and mobilize Ca++, and iincreases it's absorption in the intestine. Calcium in the body declines without parathyroid hormone causing symptoms such as facial muscle twitching, spasm of the muscles of the arms, wrists and hands. Parathyroid hormone also acts on the kidneys to remove phosphate.

When plasma Ca++ is high parathyroid hormone acts to deposit it in bone, when it's low Ca++ is removed from bone into plasma. An increase in plasma phosphate stimulates parathyroid hormone secretion lowering plasma C++ by depositing in bone. It has been proven that ionized calcium acts directly on the parathyroid to stimulate secretion. A decrease in magnesium stimulates parathyroid secretion and an increase may inhibits secretion. Secretion is also increased with adrenaline and cyclic AMP.
